Lost and missing Pets is all too common. Some pets provide the desire to explore and then wander too far. Other pets run away out of fear and can't find the way back. This week, many people lost pets after the sound of fireworks scared them on fourth of July. When a beloved pet is missing, the emotional strain make it difficult for an owner to focus on the practical side of things. Therefore, it is enlisting your community to help is so important when it comes to finding lost pets.

Previously people came to the neighborhood by posting signs and knocking on doors. This is all still crucial, but modern technology has given us a potentially more valuable tool: social media. In recent years, the use of social media helped restore many lost pets. Back in may wrote veterinary medicine Guide Dr. Janet Crosby about the use of social media after Joplin Tornado to find lost pets. Last month, tweeted actor-comedian Dane Cook for his missing dog, which was soon found. A few weeks ago, a lost dog was found here in my own city of Atlanta, GA, thanks to people reading an entry on Patch.com, and helped to spread the word.

To reach out to your online community is like almost posting signs in the neighborhood. If your dog is lost, give words to your contacts via Facebook and Twitter to get all on the lookout. Contact your local society sites like Patch.com and Examiner.com to see if an entry about your lost pets can be posted. Your online contacts can easily re-record your story to their online contacts, create a huge amount of exposure. People can also easily post updates when, for example, the spot your dog in a particular area.
