Last of the Dogmen [VHS]

Despite an irritating, tacked-on voice-over narration that somebody must have thought was necessary to make sense of the story (it wasn't), Last of the Dogmen is actually a very moving and magical film. Tom Berenger plays a Montana bounty hunter who helps an anthropologist (Barbara Hershey) search for the descendants of a Cheyenne tribe who disappeared in the 1870s. What the two find in a remote mountain stretch is an entire community of Cheyenne who have kept themselves cut off from the modern world. A Dances with Wolves parallel emerges as the white outsiders gradually fit in, but Last of the Dogmen stands up just fine without comparison to any other films. As in Kevin Costner's Oscar-winning movie, however, there are ways in which this film captures a similar sense of yearning, mystery, and loss. --Tom Keogh

February is National Pet Dental Health month

February is here, and that means it is National Pet Dental Health month. It can be easy to overlook your dog oral health on a daily basis. This campaign is a great reminder to take care of your dog teeth now and throughout the year.

How to become a dog trainer

Perhaps you "have a way" with dogs. Maybe you just love dogs and want to make a career of it. Are you fascinated with the idea of training dogs? Even if you are just curious, is it worthwhile to look into the process to become a dog trainer. Some dog trainers make it as a hobby or side job, while others start their own businesses or work full time for dog training companies. Scottish Deerhound takes best in Show at Westminster

The 135th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show has just come to an end exciting. Champion mestre-drumroll please-a Scottish Deerhound named "Carya" (GCH Foxcliffe Hickory wind). The seven group champions compete tonight on the prestigious title of best show they were all beautiful. champion dogs, so of course it was a tough competition. Dogs in operation tonight was as follows:

Six new AKC dog breeds got their Westminster debut this year. Although none of them won in their groups, it was nice to see a few new breeds. Here is the list:

Boykin Spaniel
Free-range Leonberger
Cane Corso
Redbone Coonhound
Bluetick Coonhound
Iceland on Sheepdog imports

When your Poodle Gets a Bug bite

Your Poodle may one day find themselves face to face with a wasp, bee, yellow jacket, spider or other crushing or biting insect. In most cases, you will encounter harmless. But dogs may get stung by these critters, and it not only hurts, but can cause a severe reaction and disease as well as.

Sting bees, wasps and Yellow Jackets of swelling and is painful. It is usually the extent of the damage, but dogs have been stung repeatedly could experience the shock from venom. In addition, just as some people are very allergic insect bites and stings, some dogs are allergic and respond seriously bites and stings.

When it comes to insect bites and stings, is the best advice to identify the attacker and call your veterinarian. Ask for instructions on what to do at home to do your dog comfortable immediately.

Positive reinforcement dog training systems

There is much confusion in relation to positive reinforcement dog training-how it works, whether it works properly as a stand alone system, etc.   I recently came across a summary of the 4 critical elements of a positive reinforcement training system that really works:

1: A positive reinforcement dog training course must deal with positive reinforcement only. And it must be stated that in its coverage.  One positive reinforcement dog training expert, insists that "many books will attempt to hide the fact that you have hit, drag, even throw links on your animals to get it to perform".   He was exaggerating a little here-I am aware of a training method, as the Advocate General take a small piece of the chain on the floor near the dog to get those dogs immediate attention.  I was taught this method even when my dogs were puppies.  File handling terribly anxious method, but it certainly does not involve animal cruelty.  However, he has a point.

And Yes, these other dog training methods will work, but your dog could end up being a little cautious with you.  Positive reinforcement dog training, teach you on the other hand, how to solve behavior problems without even touching your dog.

2: Any positive reinforcement dog training system needs have very specific instructions on how to deal with each behavior, that may arise. It shall cover at least the basics of how to get started, including the following behaviors, which you will want to encourage or discourage as and when appropriate:

Sit
Stay
Lie down
Come
Crate training
Barking
Bites
Jump
Potty Training
Aggression
Fear (ie. Vacuum Cleaners)
Cord control

3: it is also preferable to have a dog training method, which results in your dog will be trained to perform all these behaviors with hand cues.  Hand cues you can take training to the next level.

A well-trained dog must learn to master all the basic behaviors with Visual cues and hand signals, sound signals. Your dog will not always be able to hear them. He may be in a noisy park or lose his hearing with old age, and will be dependent on your signals to still obey, even when he does not hear you.

4: A positive reinforcement dog training manual should also cover the more difficult behaviors and not only focus on training your dog to a merely tolerable level.

Any training method should create confidence.  If your dog does not trust you, or, God forbid, is afraid of you, to some extent, you get the best out of your dog.  It is this extra confidence, which will take your relationship with your dog to the next level.  And you can use positive reinforcement dog training to achieve some quite spectacular results.  And it can give you the benefit of a very deep bond with your dog.

Trimming a Chihuahuas nails

To save your skin and the skin on your Chihuahua, as well as your furniture and floors, do you want to trim your Chihuahuas nails at least once a month. Trimming nails Chihuahuas is also important, because long nails quickly becomes unpleasant for him.

Can I Give my dog Aspirin for pain?

Do you know what to give a dog as a pain reliever?  It is one of the most difficult things to do in order to see our beloved pets suffering — and did not know what to do about it.

Dogs are not equipped with our human language for us to be able to understand the cause and source of his pain. You will know that your dog is suffering, because he is skingert, weeping, listless and unwilling to move and eat. When you see this happening, restricting his movement, as you can until you can take him to a more thorough check-up examination by an official veterinarian.

Westminster Dog Show-day one «Quais

The second half of the 135th Westminster Kennel Club Dog Show is currently underway, and best in Show competition is just a few hours away. Put your favorite race? Dressage race of the week: pension Scottish Deerhound

In honor of this year's Westminster winner Scottish Deerhound is this week's featured race. A somewhat rare breed of dog, Scottish Deerhound is athletic, brave and loyal. This Hound is large, long and lean with a physique much like a Greyhound. The breed is known as the "Royal dog of Scotland" and was once described by author Sir Walter Scott as "The most perfect creature of heaven."

Redbone Coonhound is yet another new AKC breed, will make it's Westminster Dog Show debut this February. The beautiful Redbone Coonhound is a mild-manierede yet energetic Hound with a friendly and loyal content disposition. Easily recognized for its brilliant red color, is this hard work Mikkel suited for both hunting and friendship.

Like many breeds is Redbone not for everyone. The most important thing for this race is to live in an active household. Redbone needs exercise and lots of it. without sheep he quickly bored. The next thing you know, that lovely song-like bay of his might start to get annoying (to you and your neighbours). He perhaps even worse, try to escape and wander away from following a scent. Redbone is actually so anxious to follow the fragrances that he cannot have confidence to off leash, unless you have a fenced area. Drive to hunt is just hard-wired in these dogs, so that they can hardly resist.

When you understand the Redbone Coonhound, you will probably come to realize what an absolutely wonderful race it is. Should your dog sleep in your bed?

In the last week, I have seen several stories on the Internet about the potential risks of sharing the bed with your dog. As covered by CNN health, contains February issue of a CDC Health Journal, a report on various pathogens we can come from snuggling with our dogs. UK's Daily Mail says, to leave your dog in your bed "can increase the chances of contracting all from worms to plague."

Yes, it is true that there are several zoonotic diseases, that all pet owners should know about. However, I think these stories can be taken the wrong way and cause some unnecessary alarm. I personally believe that a study like this should serve as a reminder to keep our pets healthy. The decision to allow your dog on the bed or other furniture is one of personal preference. Like many of us, I, like huddling with my pet and have always allowed them on the bed and couch. They are kept current on vaccines and get regular VET doctors ' fees, and I have never had any problems. Working in the veterinary field, I understand the risks associated with the handling of the animals-especially those with unknown stories. But when it comes to my own pets, I know that the risk is minimal.

It is a bit of a controversy among dog owners. Many of us think of nuclear States our dogs from the bed or couch, while others are completely against the dogs on the furniture. What is the proper thing to do? The truth is, there is no rule that is set in stone. It really depends on you and your dog. What is your opinion? Allow your dogs share your bed, couch or other furniture? Tell us why or why not.

This week we take a look at the Bluetick Coonhound, a cousin of last week's featured race, Redbone Coonhound. They are remarkably similar, but they are actually two distinctly separate dog breeds. While Redbone is known for its lovely red color, is the Bluetick Coonhound easily recognized for its beautiful pattern and color.

Bluetick Coonhound is also one of the newer AKC breeds, which will make it's Westminster Dog Show debut in a few weeks. The beautiful Bluetick Coonhound is a hardworking hound that makes an excellent hunter and loyal companion. The breed is of course not right for everyone. Natural Heartworm treatment and prevention

Heartworm treatment and prevention-with herbs

Despite the terrible stories your VET will tell you about Heartworm angrebets would be likely to result in death of your dog (and there certainly can be true), there is a way to treat Heartworm and bring your dog back to optimal health.  And it is all natural.

This regime is also a fabulous natural preventive for Heartworm.

Since Robin Sockness ' 10 year old dog, Bandit, was diagnosed with "moderate to severe" heartworm in January 2000, got to know Robin Bandit had to live around 6 months, and that the Bandit is to be treated with steroids to his last months more comfortable.

Robin refused to accept this devastating news and was determined to cure her beloved Bandit, and without any drugs.  After careful research and study conceived Robin a all-natural treatment with a specific tag herbs, called for Bandit nature's Sunshine.  She not only succeeded in curing Bandit of his heartworm, but improved his general health and Bandit live many more healthy years.  Unfortunately, aged Bandit passed away recently, of natural causes, 17.

Yorkshire Terrier Rescue groups

When you consider purchasing a Yorkshire Terrier, you will probably begin by searching out quality breeders in your area, as well as in other areas in the United States and Canada. However, you can consider to acquire your Yorkshire Terrier from a Yorkshire Terrier Rescue Group instead.

You also get a Yorkshire Terrier who is in excellent health and in the worst case, if a dog has health problems, you will be made fully aware of these problems before you adopt the dog. With an adult dog, you don't have to go through terror and chaos that can bring a puppy to your home. You will not deal with nights howling. You will not treat the fairs on the floor. You will not treat, chewed up shoes, belts, or furniture. Your new Yorkshire Terrier will be trained and previously his ' terrible two ' phase.

This is one of the many reasons why people choose an adult Yorkshire Terrier through a rescue operation over a sweet little puppy from a breeder. They not only have the time or patience to handle a puppy? which is very time consuming. They may not want these problems, but they want a dog, and a rescue operation enables this wish to come true.

Among those who have adopted from rescue centres, most will agree, that the dogs, the rescued is more loving and loyal than a dog, they acquired as a puppy. It seems that these adult dogs know they have been rescued, and they show their love and appreciation for their new owners every day.

Another reason to adopt your Yorkshire Terrier from a rescue operation, it is often much cheaper than to buy a puppy from a breeder. In some cases is not on the basis of Frantic known, so that you may not have registration papers or a pedigree, but you will have a friend for life.
