These dogs were bred for centuries by the Chinese to serve as guard dogs and hunters. Unfortunately, they were also bred for dog fighting. This explains the harsh Bristly coat and extra-thick skin, which were somewhat resistant bites and scratches. Unfortunately, fl-Pei because of the breed's history has a tendency to be aggressive around other animals and sometimes even people.

It is too bad that fl-Peis can have a pretty bad rap. These Bristly hair make many of us break out in an itchy rash and their independent and headstrong sometimes positions require plenty of human patience. They also have their fair share of health concerns. Shar-Pei can however make a wonderful companion for the right person. This is an intelligent dog that will form a bond with them he has confidence. Proper socialization is key with this race. So, before you make a judgment, learn more about the Chinese Shar-Pei, and meet a few in person. It can even be the dog for you.
